Dr Dale Cooper was invited to make a presentation on *Big risks in the tertiary sector* at the Unimutual annual conference in Sydney on 5-7 September. Unimutual is a mutual insurer, established in 1989 to provide protections unavailable from commercial insurance at the time for members affiliated with tertiary education. The presentation discusses what 'big risks' are, and scenario-based approaches for identifying them.

Read moreLiability risk assessment for a major IT services contract
Broadleaf recently completed a contract liability risk assessment for a major IT service delivery for a Commonwealth agency. This was to help the procurement team arrive at an appropriate limit or cap on commercial liabilities to be included in the contract. Setting an appropriate limit avoids the imposition of an unreasonably large cap (or even unlimited liability) on the supplier, an approach that leads to unnecessary increases in the contract price.

Broadleaf carried out a risk assessment of a concessional loan offered by the Commonwealth Government. The risk assessment examined the administration and financial performance of the loan. It confirmed the existing controls were well designed and reasonable in the circumstances as well as helping to establish priorities for assurance of the controls during the term of the loan.

Broadleaf was engaged to review and update VCAT's organisational risk management process. Personnel were engaged in a comprehensive risk assessment focused around three workshops: establishing the context, risk assessment and treatment planning. This was integrated with VCAT's strategic planning process and changes arising from the transition to the newly established Courts Services Victoria administration.
