Sector outline

Broadleaf has conducted many studies for organisations in the food and beverage sector, from helping them investigate the effects of climate change on their operations through to the development of full frameworks for the management of all risks.

The sector is diverse, but common themes that characterise risk profiles include a dependency on supply chains and a necessary preoccupation with food safety and hygiene. For most organisations, their market reputation and competitor actions are major risk sources. For those who depend on export, trade restrictions, foreign exchange movements and tax regimes provide the major challenges.

Representative projects

The following list of projects illustrates the diverse range of clients Broadleaf has worked with and the variety of the support and advice they have sought.

Downer EDi Engineering

We supported a bid by Downer to supply and install a milk drier for a large dairy company. We facilitated two workshops, one to examine risks in qualitative terms and one to develop a quantitative risk model that represented the uncertainty in the cost estimate.

Fonterra NZMP

We conducted a risk assessment workshop for NZMP, the dairy ingredients brand of Fonterra. The focus was on a new management information system for demand planning and customer profiling, in a period of organisational change.

Fosters Group

We developed the risk management framework for the group and then implemented a training program for senior managers. We mentored the risk manager and his staff.

Goodman Fielder

We facilitated a risk assessment workshop for a business unit in New Zealand.

After the relisting of the company and its return from private ownership, Broadleaf was commissioned to survey the effectiveness of the arrangements for managing risk and then to develop a design for an improved framework and an implementation plan.

Lion Nathan

In association with Marsden Jacob Associates, we facilitated a risk assessment concerned with the impacts of climate change on the company. The assessment considered a wide-range of risk sources including market changes and shortages of raw materials. A detailed risk treatment plan was developed for the company.

National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility (Griffith University)

We were invited to participate in the steering committee of a government funded project that investigated 'Food Security, Risk Management and Climate Change' in Australia.

Sun Rice (Ricegrowers Ltd)

We facilitated a risk assessment of the company and, working closely with senior management, used bow tie analysis to develop detailed risk treatment plans.

Warrnambool Cheese and Butter

Broadleaf has provided several services to the company over many years. These included the facilitation of strategic risk assessments of the entire company and, specifically, of its Japanese operations and JV relationship.
